What is Dungeons and Dragons?
Have you ever wanted to go on an adventure? To step into someone else’s shoes for a few hours and live in a land of fantasy? I have.
Over the years I’ve been the pilot of a spaceship, a vampire surviving on the mean streets of Chicago, a cyberpunk mechanic, and a high elf wizard who liked to bite people.
I’ve done all of this because I play Dungeons & Dragons.
So, what is it—the game played by millions worldwide, inspiring films, video games, and TV series?
The best way to think about Dungeons & Dragons is this: imagine you and your friends sit down to tell a story together. Most of you become the main characters—the heroes of the tale—while one person takes on the role of the Dungeon Master (or DM), who builds the world, plays its people, and sets the challenges you face. Together, you shape a story where the players’ decisions guide how events unfold.
How it Works: Describe, Decide, Roll
At its core, the game runs in a simple loop:
Describe – The Dungeon Master sets the scene.
“You wake up in a dungeon cell. You can’t remember much of last night—you were all too drunk. What do you do?”
Decide – The players choose their actions.
“I’m going to pick the lock.”
Roll – The DM asks for a dice roll (usually a 20-sided die) to see if you succeed.
“You rolled a 17? Let’s see what happens…”
Describe again – The story moves forward based on the result.
“The lock clicks open. You step into the corridor—and come face to face with a guard. What do you do?”
And then the cycle continues.
Why It’s Different
For me, the magic of Dungeons & Dragons lies in the decide part. Unlike most games that limit you to a handful of choices, in D&D you can try anything—as long as your character could reasonably do it and the DM agrees. Want to sweet-talk the dragon? Build a raft out of goblin shields? It’s all possible.
That freedom is rare in games. Honestly, it’s rare in real life.
More Than a Game
For me, Dungeons & Dragons is the most fun I’ve ever had. Through it I’ve made lifelong friends, built confidence, and even improved my mental health. It’s not just dice and rules—it’s laughter, teamwork, and unforgettable adventures.
